Course Information

A one-day workshop designed for tour guides to use community mapping as a tool to unlock hidden stories in the local heritage and cultural sites by conducting in-depth interviews with the residents or shop owners of local heritage/cultural sites.

The course will be the first in the industry and the networking session to share insights after the practical session will be invaluable to all the participants.

Lesson Plan

This course consists of 8 modules:

Day 1 (9.00 am to 10.30am)

Introduction to Community Mapping (Lecture)_x000D_
The trainer will introduce the concept and_x000D_
explain how to conduct on-site interviews_x000D_
with the residents and shop owners._x000D_
Some case studies will be shared to_x000D_
encourage participants to find out more_x000D_
during the practical session, especially_x000D_
stories on the vanishing trades.

Day 1 (10.30 am to 11.00am)

Travelling to Jalan Bear & Little India_x000D_
Participants will travel to Jalan Besar and_x000D_
Little India. (Transport not included)

Day 1 (11.00 am to 1.00pm)

Community Mapping in Action (Practical)_x000D_
The participants will be facilitated and visit_x000D_
Jalan Besar and Little India. They will take_x000D_
the opportunity to visit sites less popular_x000D_
and conduct interview to gather stories

Trainer's Profile

Rachel Chen

Rachel Chen has over 12 years of professional experience in the arts and heritage sector. She specialised in audience engagement and interpretive content development with the National Gallery Singapore and National Heritage Board. In 2018, she launched a series of Passion Tours
with the Singapore Tourism Board and has been partnering corporate clients to curate meaningful tour experiences anchored in history and visual arts.


She has been teaching with the Polytechnic since 2016 and is currently an adjunct lecturer for the Diploma in Arts Business Management course.

In-class assessments._x000D_

Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who achieve at least 75% attendance and pass assessments.
