Course Information

The increase in the number of pet lovers in Singapore had resulted in a greater need for pet-related services and products.

The Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Practice aims to deepen the skills of veterinary technicians currently working in the veterinary, animal care and related industries.

The course will focus on veterinary clinical practice and provide skills to enable career progression and job broadening, and will enhance their productivity and versatility in the veterinary care industry.

Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMC) are available. Please view Lesson Plan to find relevant SBMC. SBMC are bite-sized part-time courses for individuals to acquire new skills or deepen relevant skills, without the need to pursue a full diploma.

Learning Outcomes

Build your clinical skills and knowledge in emergency and critical animal care with guidance from experienced veterinarian lecturers. From statutory regulations in veterinary practice to shelter management, you will learn how to manage trauma, common emergencies and skills to market veterinary products and services.

Post-Diploma Certificate in Clinical Procedures
Module
Veterinary Practice Management
Provides an understanding of statutory regulations covering licensing, import and export of pet animals, and ethical compliances (i.e. WSH act and Risk Assessment Regulations) in veterinary practice.
Module
Emergency and Critical Care
Introduces fundamentals of fluid therapy and helps participants to gain an understanding of transfusion medicine and trauma management.
Module
Pain Management and Anaesthesia
Equips participants with effective communication to clients in ensuring delivery of appropriate analgesia for patients. It will also cover anaesthetic protocol selection and the proper execution of anaesthesia.
Post-Diploma Certificate in Professional Practices
Module
Pet Industry Operations and Regulations
Provides an understanding of the operations and regulations of pet related industry and veterinary clinics in Singapore.

Covers the basic concepts and knowledge of customer service principles and skills, and marketing of veterinary products and services.

Introduces the basic management principles of an animal shelter and information about shelter programs.

Clinical Applications
Participants will complete a project which requires analysis and reflection on the skills and competencies of an animal healthcare/welfare related job scope and provide a presentation at the end of the module.

You are required to complete 2 post-diploma certificates within 2-year validity period to be awarded the Specialist Diploma qualification.


Entry Requirements

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are invited to apply for the course:

  • A local Polytechnic Diplomaor Degree in a relevant discipline, and
  • _x000D_

  • Significant animal handling experience or who display a deep passion for animal care
  • _x000D_

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)_x000D_
Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
