Course Information

A career in student care can be one of the most meaningful careers you can have. More than providing academic and social support to children, the role of a student care professional is key in ensuring that children develop holistically to their full potential in a safe, structured and nurturing environment.

Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMC) are available. Please view Lesson Plan to find relevant SBMC. SBMC are bite-sized part-time courses for individuals to acquire new skills or deepen relevant skills, without the need to pursue a full diploma.

Learning Outcomes

The course introduces you to the student care services landscape and strategies to manage students’ behaviour, including challenging behaviours. You will also understand and learn how to curate programmes that develop the students’ social emotional learning needs._x000D_

What’s more, you will gain supervisory knowledge to manage a centre that provides student related services that includes coaching and supervision of staff.

Lesson Plan

Certificate in Introduction to Student Services
Gain an understanding of the various stages of a child's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development and learn how to apply this knowledge to manage your students' behaviour. You will also be equipped with effective classroom management techniques to provide an orderly and conducive learning environment for your students.

Understanding Student Services
Introduces major theories in child development and their implications on general student care practices and programme implementation. It also equips you with knowledge of basic measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their students.

*Participants who had achieved the Statement of Attainment for WSQ Introductory to Student Care Centre will exempted from the module "Understanding Student Services"

Understanding Children's Behaviour
Provides understanding of the various stages of a child's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development and learn how to apply this knowledge to guide and manage students' behaviour.

Managing Classroom Behavior
Covers effective classroom management techniques to provide an orderly and conducive learning environment for students.
Certificate in Student Management
Module
Managing Challenging Behaviour
Participants will gain an understanding of the various developmental issues faced by school-going children (including special needs) and examine the causes of challenging behaviour. Participants will learn how to develop and implement basic behavioural strategies based on this understanding.

Participants who had passed all the assessments for "Working with Children: Behaviour and Guidance" will be exempted from the module "Managing Challenging Behaviour".

Participants will be introduced to Group Theory and Group Dynamics Theory and learn facilitation skills to effectively conduct and manage group activities.

Conducting Needs Assessment & Evaluation in Programme Development
Participants will learn the importance of conducting needs assessment prior to any programme implementation. They will learn techniques to conduct needs assessment and evaluate the programme’s effectiveness.

Developing Programmes for Social Emotional Learning
Participants will be guided through a systematic framework of developing programmes that will help to enhance their students’ Social Emotional Learning (SEL). They will gain an understanding of how SEL affects the students’ learning outcomes and learn how to set up a learning environment that is conducive to the students’ SEL development.

Planning Effective Curriculum
Participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to plan developmentally appropriate curriculum their students. Participants will take reference from a programme development framework on the various stages of planning

Provides an overall view of how to run a student service centre, including use of technology, job redesign, legal and ethical considerations, to improve your centre's overall efficiency. You will also understand how to engage and work with community stakeholders to promote the holistic development of your students.

Introduces you to the use of technology and job re-design, to develop processes to improve the centre's overall efficiency.

Managing Stakeholders: Engaging the community
Covers the importance of engaging families and community stakeholders to promote the overall holistic development of students; and equip you with strategies on how to engage these key stakeholders.

Understanding Legal and Ethical Behaviour
Introduces you to legal and ethical considerations in student care practices. You will also learn to reflect on how personal, cultural identity, attitudes and values can potentially influence one's professional behavior.
Certificate in Managing and Leading Staff
As a supervisor or a potential supervisor, you will acquire a range of supervisory skills to manage your staff, including ways to reward, delegate and reward your staff, that will help you to maximise your team's potential. You will also learn how to evaluate your staff's learning and training needs to manage your staff's professional development.

Covers a range of supervisory skills to manage staff and improve overall job satisfaction in a student service context.
